Hello and welcome to the Daring to Succeed podcast.
Today, I’m going to talk about some practical strategies for getting ahead in your career–without the ick of going around saying how amazing you are or simply agreeing to everything management says.
It doesn’t matter whether you are trying to get a promotion, making a career pivot or just trying to land a job right now.
The one thing you need to do is show that you have the skills and experience for that next move.
I’m going to start with the one thing that people do wrong first–mostly because if you disagree with me, you can drop off the podcast now because you won’t get value from the rest.
That mistake is trying to demonstrate the value that you think is important.
Time and time again, I’ve had people come to me, either as someone who reported to me or who was looking for coaching, make the case for why they should get the job, the promotion, the new role, because of the skills, experience or achievements that they’re proud of.
And although they should be proud of these things, this is not the path to their next role.
If it was, we’d all be getting that job, that promotion, that leap to a different career path.
The practical reality of it is there is a chain of command when it comes to deciding who gets hired and promoted.
It starts with the hiring manager, and works it’s way up their leadership management structure.
How high the approvals go depends on the company, the seniority of role and sometimes the level of micromanagement for that reporting structure.
But it’s a reality that a lot of people don’t consider when they’re working on their careers.
From being the person responsible for promotions and hiring, to getting jobs and promotions for myself, to coaching others to get their new jobs and promotions, I can tell you that the only way to guarantee success is to show the decision makers that you have the skills and experience they value for that role or promotion you’re targeting.
Be proud of what you value.
But demonstrate what is valued by the people making the decision.
So that’s it.
